WINTER STORM FORECAST
MORNING UPDATE: The cold front is currently clearing the forecast area. Temperatures have generally reached the high for the day and will remain steady or slowly fall to below freezing. Temperatures currently are running colder than forecasted by model guidance to this point.
TODAY THROUGH MONDAY: A significant winter storm is set to impact much of the forecast area.
Today, high pressure will build into the region with partly cloudy skies and winds from the northwest around 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will rise into the mid 20’s to upper 30’s for highs.
Tonight, clouds will increase with scattered snow showers towards morning with little if any accumulation expected. Winds will veer from the northwest to the northeast around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will fall into the lower 20’s to lower 30’s for lows.
On Sunday, snow will begin across the entire forecast area with some accumulations expected. By mid morning, the snow will change to rain over southern New Jersey and southern suburbs of Philadelphia. The snow will begin to mix with sleet and freezing rain by the afternoon over much of central New Jersey and the New York city metro. The snow will change to rain by the evening. Snow mixed with sleet and freezing rain will continue through the evening hours over northern New Jersey before changing to rain by mid night. Meanwhile, snow will continue through the entire day and night on Sunday over the southern Hudson Valley and Connecticut. Winds will veer from the northeast to southeast around 10 to 20 mph through the period. Temperatures will rise into the lower 30’s over the northern teir to around 50 over southern New Jersey by the evening hours.
On Monday, the coastal low will develop off the New Jersey coast. Rain will end over much of New Jersey as colder air comes in from the west. However, the rain will change back to snow over much of Connecticut and eastern Long Island, producing a prolonged period of snow over these locations. High temperatures will occur in the morning ranging from the mid 30’s to upper 40’s before falling through the 30’s and 40’s the rest of the day.
TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Partly cloudy and breezy conditions can be expected on Tuesday. A series of weak areas of low pressure will bring scattered snow showers to the region on Wednesday evening through Thursday. High pressure will produce sunny and cold conditions on Friday. Temperatures will range from the lower 20’s to lower 30’s for lows and lower 30’s to lower 40’s for highs.
