An upper disturbance over the Ohio Valley will continue to move east this afternoon. This disturbance will destabilize the atmosphere as the afternoon and evening progresses, which will produce showers and thunderstorms over eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and the Hudson Valley. The immediate coastal areas will be spared the most of the showers as the atmosphere is more stable along the coast.
Expect showers and thunderstorms to develop this afternoon and evening over the Philadelphia and New York City metro. The thunderstorms will remain below severe levels but will be capable of occasional lightning, small hail, heavy downpours, and wind gusts to 50 mph.

No wide spread severe weather is expected today. However, as a strong upper low and long wave trough rotates through the eastern United States, a few isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may develop along the Gulf Coast, Southeast, Ohio Valley, and Northeast this afternoon. The largest risk from these thunderstorms will be large hail and wind gusts to 60 mph.
Meanwhile, due to some thermal mixing, a few isolated severe thunderstorms may develop over the Rockies in response to an unstable environment. Otherwise, the majority of the United States will have quiet conditions.

TODAY THROUGH TUESDAY:
Today: Increasing clouds with showers and thunderstorms. Some of the thunderstorms will become severe with the strongest thunderstorms producing frequent lightningt, large hail, wind gusts over 65 mph, isolated tornadoes, and heavy downpours. Winds will be from the southwest around 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will rise into the lower to upper 80’s for highs.
Tonight: Strong to severe thunderstorms expected with the strongest thunderstorms producing frequent lightning, large hail, wind gusts over 65 mph, heavy downpours, and isolated tornadoes. Winds will veer from the southwes to west around 10 to 20 mph. Temperatures will fall into the upper 60’s to lower 70’s for lows.
Monday: Lingering morning showers followed by clearing skies. Winds will be from the west around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will rise into the lower to upper 80’s for highs.
Monday night: Partly cloudy with winds from the west around 5 to 10 mph. Temperatures will fall into the lower to upper 60’s for lows.

The line of thunderstorms moving towards the forecast area has a high chance of intensifying due to the atmosphere ahead of these thunderstorms.
Currently temperatures are in the upper 70’s to lower 80’s with dew points in the upper 60’s to lower 70’s, which is a very warm, humid, and unstable atmosphere to move into. With plenty of low level moisture and heat content for these thunderstorms to fuel on, expect the line of thunderstorms to reintensify in the coming hour after a brief pulse down over eastern Pennsylvania. The areas most likely to see this intensification is over northern and central New Jersey, the northern metro of Philadelphia, and much of the New York City metro area.
Due to influences from the Atlantic, the atmosphere is slightly more stable over southern New Jersey and thus a lower potential for severe thunderstorms.
June 29th, 2008 by Steven DiMartino
A line of strong to severe thunderstorms are rapidly moving through eastern Pennsylvania and will impact much of the New York City and Philadelphia metro areas in the next 3 hours. These thunderstorms are capable of frequent ground to sky lightning, large hail, heavy downpours, and wind gusts over 60 mph.
Over the next 30 minutes the following counties in the forecast area will be impacted:
Pennsylvania: Wayne, Pike, Lackawanna, Pike, Monroe, Luzerne, Carbon, Lehigh, Schuylkill, Columbia, Berks, Lancaster, York, and Chester
New York: Sullivan, Ulster
June 29th, 2008 by Steven DiMartino
An area of strong to severe thunderstorms will continue to move through northeastern New Jersey and much of New York City. These thunderstorms are producing large hail, frequent lightning, wind gusts over 65 mph, and very heavy downpours. Expect flash flooding over much of the 5 boroughs of New York City and western Long Island along with much of northeastern New Jersey including Newark, New Jersey.
This will not be the last series of thunderstorms for the forecast area. A line of strong to severe thunderstorms is currently developing over Pennsylvania and central New York, which is producing strong straight line winds, frequent lightning, and large hail. These thunderstorms will impact the forecast area later this evening.
Although tornadoes have not developed over the forecast area, some thunderstorms will still be capable of producing isolated tornadoes through this evening.
As for me, lost power for a while so I couldn’t post. However I can attest that these thunderstorms have been especially nasty over Monmouth County. More later!

The majority of the severe weather today will be focused from southern New England back to the Eastern Great Lakes and southward towards the Southeast as a strong cold front moves through the eastern third of the United States.
As described in the technical forecast discussion, several atmospheric features are combining over these locations to produce a very unstable atmosphere, strong laspe rates, and significant vertical direcation and speed shear. These attributes to the atmosphere will lead to the development of large hail, frequent lightning, wind gusts over 65 mph, isolated tornadoes, and heavy downpours.
At first, much of the development of thunderstorms will be of super cell, independent thunderstorms that will have the potential to develop rapidly and with limited warning over these regions. However, as the cold front approaches and the low level jet stream increases in strength this evening, a solid intense line of strong to severe thunderstorms will develop and track east towards the coastal plain. This line of thunderstorms will have the potential to develop impressive bow echoes, which is an indication of strong wind gusts along with large hail.
These thunderstorms will be dangerous and caution should be used this afternoon and evening with these thunderstorms.
