Increasing Chance Of Thunderstorms This Afternoon

An upper level disturbance over West Virginia will track towards the forecast area this afternoon and evening.  The atmosphere over the New York City and Philadelphia metropolitian areas are already close to convective temperatures and the cap over the area is weakening rapidly.  The enhance lifting combined with the cool, dry air aloft will support isolated severe thunderstorms.  These thunderstorms will feature wind gusts to 65 mph, frequent lightning, isolated large hail, and heavy downpours.

The greatest risk is over eastern Pennsylvania, much of New Jersey except along the immediate coast, the Hudson Valley, and much of Connecticut.  Coastal locations like much of Long Island, the immediate Connecticut coast, and coastal New Jersey will have a more stable atmosphere and thus a lower potential for severe thunderstorms.

Severe Weather For Today

Generally a quiet severe weather day for today.

An upper trough over the Ohio Valley and Northeast will continue to move east and produce strong to isolated severe thunderstorms over much of the Northeast and Mid Atlantic.  There is little if any wind shear so I’m not expecting any type of tornadic thunderstorms.  However, with the laspe rate increasing over the Mid Atlantic and New England through the afternoon, the threat will exist for some thunderstorms to produce hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph in isolated cases.

Meanwhile, another strong disturbance will be quickly moving through the Rockies and northern Plains producing showers and thunderstorms.  Like the Northeast, wind shear is weak and almost a non factor.  The main threat from these thunderstorms will be large hail, frequent lightning, strong wind gusts over 65 mph, and heavy downpours.

Finally, as typical this time of year, a threat for strong to severe thunderstorms will exist along developing afternoon sea breeze fronts over the Florida Peninsula and along much of the Gulf Coast.  The main threat from these storms will be the very heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.
