Severe Weather Today

The focus on the severe weather threat today will be over the central Great Lakes, Mid West, and the central Plains as a strong cold front moves through the center part of the country.  A series of strong disturbances will move through these regions, which will produce strong lifting of a developing unstable air mass.  The greatest threat from these severe thunderstorms will be large hail, strong wind gusts, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.  Wind gusts in some of these thunderstorms will exceed 65 mph gusts due to strong downdrafts in these thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, scattered strong to isolated severe thunderstorms will develop over New England in response to a departing upper trough over the region.  Also, scattered strong thunderstorms will develop over Florida and the Gulf Coast due to thermal mixing.
