Severe Weather Today
Today, there are two main focuses of severe weather, which both can be attributed to a strong cold front moving south over the Great Lakes and the Plains.
Over the Northeast, the combination of a strong cold front at surface and impressive wind shear aloft along with an unstable atmosphere will lead to the development of strong to severe thunderstorms. The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of wind gusts over 65 mph, large hail, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.
Meanwhile, like in the Northeast, wind shear will be at a maximum over central and northern Oklahoma and the Texas Panhandle. The strong cold front will stall over central Oklahoma by this afternoon and produce showers and thunderstorms with the strongest thunderstorms capable of large hail, wind gusts over 65 mph, frequent lightning, and heavy downpours.
