Bertha Becomes A Major Hurricane

HELLO BERTHA!

Hurricane Bertha became a category three hurricane at 5 PM this afternoon when sustained winds reached 115 MPH.  How much has Bertha strengthen in the past 6 hours?  The pressure at the center of Bertha has fallen a remarkable 27 MB from 975 MB to 948 MB, which is basically the very definition of a bombing low pressure system extratropical or tropical.  That a very impressive intensification this afternoon.

Based on the latest satellite pictures, Bertha looks like a text-book image of a hurricane with impressive out flow, little if any shear, a strong central dense overcast, and a very well developed eye.

My thoughts on the track of Bertha is the following.  It is clear that Bertha has begun the turn to the north as the hurricane moves to the northwest this evening.  Model guidance is beginning to converge on Bertha turning due north towards Bermuda.  From there, the track of Bertha is basically unknown.  The fact of the matter is that the steering winds by Monday weaken and loss influence on Bertha.  As a result, the model guidance slows the advance of Bertha to the north and/or east.  There is a real threat that instead of Bertha moving out into the Atlantic, that Bertha instead stalls or meanders around the Atlantic south of Bermuda.  In short, there is great uncertainty where Hurricane Bertha will go or how strong Bertha will be after the impact of shearing from the southwest.  What is certain is that Bertha will continued to be monitored and for now, this hurricane is a very dangerous storm.
