Dry And Chilly Thanksgiving, End Of The Week

The weather pattern will quiet down for the next three days, which will give the forecast area comfortable weather conditions for the Thanksgiving holiday.

An upper low will continue to sit over the eastern Great Lakes and northern New York through the period, sending weak disturbances through the forecast area.  The lack of moisture with these disturbances mean that at most only a few clouds and an extremely isolated rain/snow shower will be expected when they pass.  The majority of the precipitation in the Northeast in this period will be over the Great Lakes via Lake Effect snow.

For the next 48 hours, I expect dry conditions with temperatures generally near normal.  Winds will be light and should not be an issue for the Thanksgiving Day parade.  In short, Santa Claus will have no problems getting to New York City on Thursday morning, so that’s always good news.

On Friday, temperatures will warm to slightly above normal ahead of an approaching cold front.  The disturbance at 500 MB will be strong and will have the ability to draw some Atlantic moisture to produce a few scattered rain and snow showers.  The main impact from the cold front will be another drop in temperatures to below normal levels once again.  Meanwhile, the upper level pattern will shift a bit.  The upper low over the eastern Great Lakes will retrograde towards central Ontario, setting up a trough axis over the Mississippi Valley and for a storm along the East coast for Sunday.
