Light Snow To Ring In The New Year

7:12 AM

While there is a lot of uncertainty for the end of the week, model guidance is at least converging on the idea of a strong Alberta Clipper moving through the forecast area on Wednesday.

Today, a much weaker disturbance will move to the north of the forecast area this afternoon.  Currently, this disturbance is enhancing Lake Effect snow showers off of Lake Ontario and has brought some flurries into the Mohawk and central/northern Hudson Valleys.  No significant accumulation is expected out of these snow showers.

123108snowmapThe model guidance has started to come into agreement that an Alberta Clipper will track towards central Pennsylvania through central New Jersey and to the south of Long Island.  The low pressure system will intensify to the south of Long Island on Wednesday afternoon, which will produce a period of moderate snow over northern New Jersey, the southern/central Hudson Valley, Long Island, and Connecticut.  The low pressure system will track far enough south to even bring some light snow showers and up to an inch of accumulation down to Philadelphia, however a trace is more likely for Philadelphia proper.  Meanwhile, the immediate New York City metro will likely see 1 to 2 inches of snow, possibly reaching 3 inches in a few isolated locations.  The big pay day appears to be the northern half of Long Island and Connecticut where the strong MLF will be located on Wednesday afternoon where up to 4 inches can fall.

As the low pressure system exits the forecast area on Wednesday evening, winds will continue to increase with sustained northwesterly winds around 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph.  Temperatures will be crashing through the 10’s and 20’s.  Wind chills on New Years Eve will likely range in the single digits below to lower 10’s, so if you are going out, layer and get some hot chocolate!  Personally, I’ll just stay in thank you!

High pressure will build into the forecast area on Thursday with clear to partly cloudy skies.  Temperatures will be well below normal.  Highs on Thursday will range from the lower 20’s to lower 30’s.
