Boat and beach report for Tuesday, June 9 2009
6:43 AM
Low clouds and fog will reduce visibility below a mile at times through the early morning hours. As a warm front lifts north and east this morning, a line of showers and strong thunderstorms will move through the coastal waters in the late morning and early afternoon hours. The cold front will move through the region in the late afternoon with additional showers and thunderstorms. A few of the thunderstorms will have the potential to reach severe levels with the most significant characteristics being strong winds gusts, large hail, frequent lightning, and very heavy downpours. The cold front will stall over southern New Jersey and the coastal waters on Wednesday as weak waves of low pressure pass to the south, which will produce scattered showers at times. A stronger area of low pressure will approach on Thursday with widespread showers and strong to severe thunderstorms.
Winds will veer from the southeast to south around 5 to 15 mph through this afternoon. Tonight, winds will briefly veer to the northwest around 5 to 10 mph as the cold front passes, however by Wednesday morning winds will veer to the east around 5 to 15 mph as the cold front stalls. By Wednesday afternoon, as the stationary front rebounds as a warm front, winds will veer to the southeast and finally south around 10 to 20 mph. On Thursday, southwesterly winds will take hold around 10 to 20 mph ahead of the cold front and will veer to the northwest by the evening hours as the cold front passes.
Temperatures this afternoon will rise into the lower 60’s to lower 70’s over the coastal waters and rocket into the lower 80’s along the coast as the low clouds and fog lift in the early afternoon. On Wednesday, temperatures will fall into the upper 50’s to mid 60’s for morning lows and rebound into the upper 60’s to mid 70’s for afternoon highs. On Thursday, temperatures will fall into the upper 50’s to mid 60’s for morning lows and rebound into the upper 60’s to upper 70’s for afternoon highs.
Water temperatures through the period will range from the mid 60’s to lower 70’s with the warmest conditions in the Delaware Bay.
Wave heights will range from 2 to 4 feet through the period, but higher swells can be expected in and around strong thunderstorms.
