Boat and Beach Report for Wednesday, June 17 2009

High pressure over New England this morning is keep the majority of the high clouds at bay, however clouds will increase initially with 090617101853high clouds and later towards evening with lows clouds.  A warm front currently over the Ohio Valley will move towards the coastal waters on Thursday with widespread showers and thunderstorms.  The showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy downpours at times and reduced visibility.  An area of low pressure will slowly move to the north of the region with an occluded front on Friday producing lingering scattered showers.

Winds through this afternoon will remain from the east around 5 to 15 mph as high pressure over southern New England continues to influence the forecast area.  Tonight, winds will be from the east-southeast around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph at times.  As the warm front moves through tomorrow, winds will veer to the southeast around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph.  Stronger gusts are possible in and around thunderstorms.  Winds will veer to the south and then southwest on Friday around 5 to 15 mph as the occluded front passes.  

Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 60’s for highs this afternoon.  On Thursday, temperatures will fall into the mid 50’s to lower 60’s for morning lows and rebound into the mid 60’s to lower 70’s for afternoon highs.  On Friday, temperatures will fall  into the lower to mid 60’s for lows and rebound into the upper 60’s to upper 70’s for afternoon highs.  

Water temperatures range from the mid 60’s to lower 70’s throughout the coastal waters with a notable exception to the east of Long Island where water temperatures remain in the mid to upper 50’s.  

Wave heights will range from 2 to 4 feet through tonight.  On Thursday, seas will continue to build to 3 to 6 feet with higher swells in and around strong thunderstorms.  Wave heights will subside on Friday down to 2 to 4 feet.  A small craft advisory is in effect through Friday morning.
