Tracking heavy rain and severe weather for Saturday, June 20 2009

7:48 AM: Rain is slowly pushing into eastern Pennsylvania, which is heavy at times.
8:49:08 AM: Very heavy rain is moving into E PA with rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour.
10:13:56 AM: Expect heavy rain for 2 to 4 hours followed by clearing conditions.
10:16:52 AM: Within the clearing is where the strong to severe thiunderstorms will develop.
12:45:45 PM: The heavy band of rain is moving relatively fast with the back edge ove E PA right now.
12:46:33 PM: Very strong thunderstorms are developing over central PA.
12:49:16 PM: These thunderstorms will become strong to severe as wind shear increases.
12:50:42 PM: Breaks in the clouds behind the heavy rainfall is causing temperatures to jump, which is significantly destabilizing the atmosphere.
12:51:51 PM: Through the later half of the afternoon, the growing threat will clear become severe thunderstorms.
12:53:16 PM: These thunderstorms will be capable of large hail, wind gusts over 50 mph, heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and flash flooding.
3:41:27 PM: The steady, heavy rain continues to move east through Long Island and Connecticut. The rain will exit within 2 hours
3:42:52 PM: However the “cold front” associated with the low pressure system is moving through eastern Pennsylvania with showers and thunderstorms.
3:43:57 PM: The atmosphere did not get the opportunity to rapidly destabilize due to the low and mid level cloud cover.
3:44:43 PM: The showers and thunderstorms will continue toove east through the forecast area.
3:47:17 PM: The line of strong thunderstorms does show signs of strong wind gusts as the line bows out. To this point storms are below severe levels.
3:48:22 PM: As the evening continues, the atmosphere will stabilize which will cause the thunderstorms to weaken and collapse.
3:49:49 PM: As for sporting events. A 2 hour brake in the rainfall can be expected before the thunderstorms reach Long Island for the golfing torny.
3:50:36 PM: The Mets game will be plagued by the potential for delays through the late afternoon.
3:51:37 PM: As for the Phillies, the start of the game may be delayed, however conditions will improve through the evening.
6:11:05 PM: Very strong thunderstorms are currently moving through much of eastern and southern NJ and the NYC metro.
6:12:40 PM: The most impressive feature with these thunderstorms is the heavy downpours, however strong wind gusts over 40 mph have been reported.
6:13:42 PM: These thunderstorms are moving quickly to the east and northeast around 15 to 25 mph.
6:28:23 PM: The thunderstorm over Monmouth County, NJ is close to severe levels.
6:29:30 PM: This thunderstorm does exhibit some turning with a weak meso-low developing, which is producing very heavy downpours.
6:30:47 PM: There is high risk for localized urban flooding from this storm along with visibility falling below a mile at times.
6:33:17 PM: Strong to severe thunderstorms are moving through S NJ with small hail, frequent lightning, heavy downpours, and strong wind gusts.
6:34:25 PM: Rain over Queens, NY is quickly moving east around 20 mph and should start to end in 30 to 45 minutes.
7:14:35 PM: Widely scattered showers will linger over much of eastern PA, NJ, and New York City. The strongest thunderstorms are now south and east.
7:16:43 PM: Periods of steady rain will continue through the evening for CT, eastern Long Island, and the central Hudson Valley.
