High pressure brings clear skies and smooth sailing

7:56 AM

090710102334High pressure this morning is slowly drifting east of the forecast area and providing the region with clear skies, light winds, and extremely comfortable weather conditions for this time of year.

Consider that most times in July, the forecast area would have already dealt with severe hot and humid days, those conditions have been nonexistent this year and replaced with rather cloudy and rainy days.

However, high pressure today will bring clear skies, low humidity, and temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s.  Perfect conditions for any out door activity!

This evening, high pressure will move towards the New England coast which will cause winds to veer from the north to the east.  Caution those heading towards the shore this evening as this easterly wind will make conditions feel cooler than when they left home.  Otherwise, clear skies can be expected along with a light wind.

wv-l-1The great conditions however will not last long.  Compared to other weekends, the weather conditions for this coming weekend will be rather enjoyable, and for once the weather pattern will work towards some favorable timing in an approaching cold front.

The disturbance over the Great Lakes, seen to the left, will eventually become yet another closed low over the Great Lakes.  This closed low will send a cold front towards the Mid Atlantic on Saturday.  The good news is that high pressure off the coast will hold off the cold front through the evening hours on Saturday.  Expect increasing clouds through the day on Saturday along with warmer conditions and increasing humidity.  However, the rain will hold off until at least the mid to late evening hours.  The cold front will move through the forecast area between 10 PM and 2 AM on Saturday night/Sunday morning.  There is potential for some of the thunderstorms to be strong, however the lack of instability due to reduced heating will limit the strength of the thunderstorms.  I will have to monitor the development of a low level jet at 850 MB, which at times can produce an isolated severe thunderstorm with strong wind gusts and heavy rain.  However, I want to stress the isolated nature of that potential.

The cold front will exit on early Sunday morning with a few lingering showers followed by clearing skies through Sunday afternoon.  However, the parade of disturbances will once again return to plague the forecast area.  The cold front that will press south of the region on Sunday morning, will stall just to the south of New Jersey.  Another disturbance will race through the Ohio Valley and into the Mid Atlantic by Sunday evening with rain returning on Sunday night for the forecast area, especially for southeastern Pennsylvania and southern New Jersey.

The disturbance will exit on Monday morning, producing a cloudy start for the new week and a few lingering showers.  The forecast area will return to the same dodge ball game we’ve been experiencing through this summer.  Disturbances will rotate through the Great Lakes into the Northeast and northern Mid Atlantic with a threat for showers and thunderstorms each afternoon through this week.  Otherwise, partly cloudy skies can be expected with temperatures ranging from slightly below normal to near normal.  This will put highs ranging from the upper 70’s to mid 80’s through the week.
