Boat and beach report for Saturday, July 11 2009

9:42 AM

Clear skies this morning will give way to increasing clouds by this afternoon as high pressure continues to slide to the east of the region.  A strong cold front will approach the forecast area this evening with scattered showers and strong to isolated severe thunderstorms after 7 PM.  The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of very strong wind gusts over 45 mph, heavy downpours, frequent lightning, and large hail.  The thunderstorms will exit the coastal waters on Sunday morning followed by clearing conditions by mid to late morning.  Weak high pressure will build into the coastal waters through the day on Sunday and into the evening with clear to partly cloudy skies.  A weak disturbance will approach the region on Monday with partly cloudy skies and widely scattered showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.

Winds will be from the south and southwest around 5 to 15 mph through this afternoon, increasing to 10 to 20 mph this evening.  Later in the evening, as the cold front approaches, winds will increase to 15 to 30 mph from the southwest.  After midnight, winds will veer to the west and decrease to 5 to 15 mph.  Winds will remain from the west around 5 to 10 mph through the day on Sunday.  Winds will veer to the southwest around 5 to 10 mph on Sunday night and Monday.

Temperatures will rise into the mid to upper 70’s for afternoon highs today.  On Sunday, temperatures will fall into the lower to mid 60’s for morning lows and rebound into the upper 70’s to lower 80’s for afternoon highs.  On Monday, temperatures will fall into the upper 50’s to lower 60’s for morning lows and rebound into the upper 70’s to lower 80’s for afternoon highs.

Wave heights will range from 2 to 4 feet through the period with higher swells in and around thunderstorms up to 7 feet.

Water temperatures will range from the mid 60’s east of Long Island, upper 60’s to lower 70’s along the central and southern New Jersey coastal waters, and lower to mid 70’s in the Delaware Bay.
