Boat and beach report for Thursday, July 16 2009

Variable cloud cover this morning as a warm front approaches from the west.  A cold front will move through the coastal waters this afternoon and evening with showers and strong to severe thunderstorms.  The greatest threat from the thunderstorms will be large hail, strong wind gusts, heavy downpours, and frequent lightning.  Partly cloudy skies will return towards Friday morning with clearing skies in the early afternoon.  Another weak disturbance will move through the region on Friday afternoon and evening with scattered showers and thunderstorms.  A few of these thunderstorms may be strong.  Partly cloudy conditions can be expected on Saturday morning, however a developing low pressure system over the southern Mid Atlantic will bring periods of light to moderate rain on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Winds will be from the southwest through this afternoon around 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph at times.  Tonight, winds will briefly shift to the west around 5 to 15 mph before backing to the southwest by Friday morning.  Winds will remain from the southwest around 5 to 15 mph through Friday evening.  On Friday night, winds will back to the south and southeast around 15 to 30 mph as a low pressure system approaches from the south.  On Saturday, winds will continue to back to the east and then northeast around 15 to 30 mph as the low pressure system moves through the region.  Winds will continue to back to the northwest on Saturday evening around 10 to 20 mph.

Temperatures will rise into the upper 70’s to mid 80’s for afternoon highs today.  On Friday, temperatures will fall into the upper 60’s to lower 70’s for morning lows and rebound into the lower to mid 80’s for afternoon highs.  On Saturday, temperatures will fall into the upper 60’s to lower 70’s for morning lows and rebound into the upper 70’s to lower 80’s for afternoon highs.

Water temperatures will range from the upper 60’s to lower 70’s over the Long Island Sound, northern New Jersey coastal waters, and east of Long Island; lower to mid 70’s over the central and southern New Jersey coastal waters; and upper 70’s to lower 80’s in the Delaware Bay and Delaware River.

Wave heights will range from 2 to 4 feet today through Friday with higher swells in strong thunderstorms.  On Saturday, wave heights will increase to 3 to 5 feet.
