Snow continues to fall

Some of the snowfall totals are in and the only thing to say is impressive. Philadelphia has recorded a record breaking snowfall of 23.2 inches as of 7:17 AM with light snow still flying throughout the region.
I expect light snow to continue to linger on through the morning hours along with a persistent northwesterly wind throughout eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Accumulations will have the potential to range from 1 to 3 inches on top of what has already fallen do to the high ratios in place over the region, which are basically around 20:1.
Further to the east, bands of moderate to heavy snow continue to impact the immediate New York City metropolitan area, all of Long Island, and all of Connecticut. Moderate to heavy snow will continue to fall over these locations through this morning and taper off in the afternoon. A few of these bands are capable of an inch of snow per hour, especially the bad over western Suffolk County and the band through eastern Connecticut down through the twin forks of Long Island.
Note to those following the radar, this snow is very fine and dry. That means the radar is having some difficulty picking up all the snowfall over the region. As such, there are some locations that appear dry on the radar but are still report snow in the observations.
The rest of the day will be very cold with temperatures struggling in the 20’s. Clearing the roads will be difficult as the wind is going to move this snow around a lot. The snowfall totals are also interesting to read. There is a significant range in snowfall totals, even in locations that were pounded with the worst snowfall. The snowfall accumulation map will not be uniform in the analysis due to the mesoscale banding producing large amounts of snow in one location but significantly limiting snowfall in other locations. The official snowfall totals will hopefully be out by this evening so I can do an overview of this storm and many of the accumulation totals are time sensitive.
