A derecho is a widespread straight line windstorm that is associated with a fast-moving band of severe thunderstorms usually in the form of a bow echo. Winds are sustained and generally increases in strength behind the “gust” front.

This event was impressive on many levels.
First – It travelled from Upper Mid West down to the Mid Atlantic Coast.
Second – The widespread path of destruction it left behind with millions in the dark during a heat wave
Third – It was able to withstand the mountains and hold its strength to the coast
Forth – The Bow was identifyable the entire length
