I just came across an interesting article this morning that made me laugh, according to researchers kidney stones will become a major issue to may Americans due to global warming. That’s right! The article goes on stating that because temperatures will increase, which they haven’t in 10 years or since 1998, that more people will become dehydrated and will be exposed to hotter temperatures, thus increasing desolved minerals in the urine. So clearly, future global warming will apparently stop people from drinking water. The author goes on to state that this is the first study to prove that global warming will directly hurt humans. The only problem is that this is a theory and nothing thus far has been proven except to state that people should try to hydrate themselves regardless of the temperature to prevent kidney stones.
At any rate, these type of articles remind me of the hysteria in the 1990’s with El Nino where everything and anything was blamed on the ENSO state. In tribute of this ridiculous article, I give you the great Chris Farley!

Hurricane Bertha, after weakening down to a category one 75 mph hurricane, has started to reorganize this morning. Thunderstorms have redeveloped and wrapped around the center of Bertha and there are signs of the eye wall redeveloping once again. I expect Bertha to intensify this morning despite what some model guidance is projecting. Why?
The fact is that right now the shear has all but died away as the upper level low that produced the shear has moved away from Bertha. As a result, the upper level environment is once again favorable for development. Also, Bertha is moving towards much warmer waters once again and is clearly beginning to feed on these warmer waters once again.
Over the next several days, Bertha will interact once again with a trough moving off the East coast. This trough is now forecasted to pull Bertha to the north towards Bermuda, but not pick the hurricane up. I’m expecting Bertha to be significantly impacted by southwesterly shear for a time and thus weakening can be expected. To what point is not known as I’m not sure just how strong Bertha will get before tomorrow evening. As we’ve seen, the atmospheric environment in the tropical Atlantic seems to support the potential for rapid intensification so watching Bertha this morning should be interesting.
By this weekend, another trough will approach Hurricane Bertha and this trough is expected to finally turn Bertha to the northeast and away from any land mass.
Today: Cloudy with showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. Winds will be from the south and southeast around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will rise into the lower 80’s to lower 90’s with humid conditions. The strongest thunderstorms will be capable of heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding.
Tonight: Cloudy with showers and thunderstorms in the evening followed by fog towards morning. Winds will be from the south around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will fall into the upper 60’s to mid 70’s for lows.
Tuesday: Cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. Winds will be from the south and southwest around 5 to 15 mph. Temperatures will rise into the upper 80’s to lower 90’s with humid conditions.

Bertha has officially become the first hurricane of the Atlantic Tropical season! Hurricane Bertha has 75 mph winds and the pressure has fallen significantly over the past 6 hours from 994MB to 987MB, which is a 7MB drop in the past six hours. Bertha has formed a well defined eye and the Central Dense Overcast (CDO) has continued to mature and develop nicely in the past several hours. I think Bertha will continue to strengthen for at least another 36 hours before shear begins to develop from the southwest ahead of a trough over the Eastern United States. In the mean time, the subsidence developing over Bertha from a departing TUTT will lead to very favorable conditions for intensification.
Of course the million dollar question is where does Bertha go. There are now two distinct families in the model guidance. Naturally, like as if this is a winter storm, the family lines are divided down familiar lines between the GFS and ECMWF. Each solution from the GFS and ECMWF have strong merits and is highly dependent on the strength and movement of a cold front and associated strong upper level trough on Wednesday. Should the trough move through the Northeast and then quickly lift out as per the GFS family, then Bertha will resume a west-northwesterly track after being pulled north. A strong western Atlantic ridge will build over Bertha and allow the Hurricane to move towards the Eastern United States. The ECMWF idea has the trough deeper and strong, which allows for Bertha to be picked up by trough and sent out into the Atlantic. Both solutions are very much valid this morning and a wait n’ see approach is going to be taken by me.
I will say this, should Bertha approach the East coast, the environment is set up for a very significant rain event for the Mid Atlantic for early next week. Consider the possible ingredients for a second. A stalled out old surface boundary over the Delaware and Maryland, a moisture loaded hurricane with plenty of latent heat energy, and various weak disturbances associated with an approaching 500 MB trough spells for a lot of trouble for someone in the Mid Atlantic.
Today: Cloudy to partly cloudy with scattered showers and thunderstorms. A few of the stronger showers and thunderstorms will produce heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, and wind gusts to 55 mph.
