After what was a rather active period of tropical weather for the Atlantic, it appears we have transitioned back to a rather quiet period of weather. A series of upper lows and strong upper level troughs once again dominates the Tropical Atlantic. One such upper level trough is keeping the Gulf of Mexico active [...]

Hurricane Bill continues to grow and become impressive this morning. Last night, Hurricane Bill reached Category 2 status with 100 mph and is expected to continue strengthen over the next 48 hours to a major hurricane.
Hurricane Bill will continue to grow in size as well as bands of convection continue to develop and rotate [...]

Hurricane Bill has formed over the central Atlantic this morning. Hurricane Bill has 75 mph sustained winds and is moving west northwest at 22 mph. Hurricane Bill will continue to move to the west northwest this evening and will eventually veer to the northwest by Thursday.
Hurricane Bill is expected to strengthen over the next [...]

Tropical Storm Bertha will continue to produce tropical storm conditions over the Island of Bermuda for the next 12 to 24 hours. Bertha this morning continues to show a great deal of dry air in the circulation with convection remaining broken and rather unimpressive. The low level circulation remains strong as seen by the low [...]

The up welled colder waters under Bertha along with increasing southwesterly shear has begun to have a significant impact on Bertha. Bertha has fallen to tropical storm strength with 70 mph winds and a very disorganized structure. Bertha remains nearly stationary, but as a trough moves off the East coast tomorrow morning, Bertha will begin [...]

Hurricane Bertha is currently under very weak steering conditions under a building western Atlantic ridge. As a result, Bertha has all but stalled just to the south and east of Bermuda. While I don’t expect Bertha to move much today, the potential for any significant strengthening has ended as well. The problem? Well, while shear [...]

Hurricane Bertha is currently going through an eye wall replacement cycle and has some dry air entrained into the circulation. As a result, Bertha has not strengthened much over the past 6 hours and remains a category 1 hurricane with 85 MPH sustained winds. Overall, Bertha is not looking very impressive this morning, however with [...]

Hurricane Bertha is a healthy and strong category 2 hurricane this morning with 105 mph and a 970 MB pressure. Bertha continues on to the northwest at a steady pass of 9 mph.
I think Bertha will begin to encounter some southwesterly shear by this afternoon, which will limit the potential for intensification for the [...]

Hurricane Bertha, as expected, has officially become a strong category two hurricane with 105 mph winds. A 6 mph increase in winds will have Bertha return to category three strength once again. As discussed through the afternoon, hurricane Bertha will likely become a category three hurricane in the next 12 hours. Wind shear will remain [...]

Once again, I sit in amazement at how rapidly Hurricane Bertha has developed over the past 12 hours. Remember, this morning Bertha was a poorly organized hurricane after having gone through some serious southwesterly shear. Then, the shear ends and BAM, Bertha blossoms into a very well developed hurricane. I’m going to be very interested [...]
