BERTHA WEAKENS TO TROPICAL STORM!

The up welled colder waters under Bertha along with increasing southwesterly shear has begun to have a significant impact on Bertha.  Bertha has fallen to tropical storm strength with 70 mph winds and a very disorganized structure.  Bertha remains nearly stationary, but as a trough moves off the East coast tomorrow morning, Bertha will begin [...]

Hurricane Bertha Makes The Turn North

Hurricane Bertha has started to make the turn to the north in the last several hours and southwesterly shear is beginning to impact the hurricane as well.  This morning, Bertha remains a dangerous category 3 hurricane, but I’m expecting some weakening today as southwesterly shear disrupts the mid level circulation of Bertha.  The turn to [...]

Bertha Becomes First Atlantic Hurricane!

Bertha has officially become the first hurricane of the Atlantic Tropical season!  Hurricane Bertha has 75 mph winds and the pressure has fallen significantly over the past 6 hours from 994MB to 987MB, which is a 7MB drop in the past six hours.  Bertha has formed a well defined eye and the Central Dense Overcast [...]

Tropical Storm Bertha Continues To Develop

This evening Tropical Storm Bertha continues to develop and strengthen.  The latest water vapor images clearly show a developing eye wall and  the low and mid level circulation becoming much better organized.  Shear that had impacted Bertha this morning has weakened considerably and is allowing the tropical storm to strength.
For the first time in several [...]

Tropical Storm Bertha Strengthens

Tropical Storm Bertha continues to develop this afternoon into a strong Tropical Storm.  Bertha has increased sustained winds to 60 mph with pressure dropping to 998 MB down 2 MB in the past 6 hours.  Bertha will likely become a hurricane in the next 24 hours.
As I was writing earlier, I honestly believe that [...]

Bertha A Threat For Southeast and Mid Atlantic

Here are my thoughts this morning on Bertha.  First, the satellite picture of Bertha this morning is rather impressive for a tropical storm.  The center is clearly under deep convection with little if any shear present at this time.  The only factor holding back Bertha is the cooler waters that Bertha is currently moving over. [...]

Bertha Born

Tropical Storm Bertha formed in the eastern Atlantic this afternoon.  As discussed this morning, then tropical depression two and now Bertha has a very well developed out flow with little in the way of shear seen inhibiting the development of this tropical storm.  As Bertha moves to the west, expect Bertha to strength close to [...]
