For most of this summer, the truly hot and humid conditions that are expected for a summer in the Mid Atlantic have not materialize for the forecast area. That is about to change over the next 48 hours and beyond.
First lets discuss this afternoon and evening. The pattern evolution this morning continues to support [...]

The latest updates can be found at the bottom!
8:36:31 AM: The steady rain is close to coming to an end as the back end of the heavy rain moves through eastern Pennsylvania.
8:37:32 AM: The occluded front is still off to the west of the region and will continue to slowly progress eastward through the afternoon.

The pleasant weather conditions from yesterday are about to come to an end. So is my confidence in model guidance, by the way. However, before I get to that, let’s take a look at the precipitation that is charging towards the forecast area.
High pressure currently centered over eastern Connecticut and Rhode Island, will continue [...]

As discussed this morning, as the sun broke through and destabilize the atmosphere, mesoscale boundaries have developed. These boundaries have produced slow moving and strong thunderstorms. These thunderstorms are producing producing very heavy rainfall over western Burlington County and Morris County in New Jersey and throughout eastern Pennsylvania. These thunderstorms are capable of producing [...]

The type of pattern the forecast area is being influenced by is at times difficult to forecast for in terms of timing showers and thunderstorms as there are several factors that mixing the atmosphere. For one, take a look at the latest visible satellite image.
The stationary front over the southern Mid Atlantic, is [...]

The majority of the showers and thunderstorms that have formed this afternoon are the direct result of the sun being allowed to warm and destabilize the lower boundary layers of the atmosphere. Showers and thunderstorms will continue to intensify and rotate northwest to southeast through the forecast area. However, as the evening progresses and [...]

As the cold front stalls over the New Jersey coast this afternoon, some of the low clouds have broken and has allowed the sun to break through. As a result, the atmosphere is warming and becoming unstable. With the frontal boundary remaining an area of focused low level lifting, this means the development of [...]

The theme for this summer, raw and cool, looks to continue as once again the forecast area is positioned north of a stationary front this morning. The forecast area is clearly under the influence of a marine air mass as an easterly wind fostered by high pressure over Maine and a stationary front over [...]

While much of eastern Pennsylvania was impacted by strong to severe thunderstorms yesterday, much of the coastal plain was under the influence of a cool marine air mass, which produced generally overcast skies and showery conditions. The strong to severe thunderstorms over Pennsylvania produce large hail, frequent light, and flash flooding. I do not [...]

This morning I was preparing for an active afternoon of severe weather for the Delaware River Valley and eastern Pennsylvania with the potential for strong thunderstorms for the rest of the region. While thunderstorms did organize and push towards severe levels over much of eastern Pennsylvania, the thunderstorms weakened as they moved towards New [...]
