Round One:

I thought of that cause I have Rocky II on in the back ground, but I think it is appropriety given the situation.

Precipitation is racing through Illinois and entering Indian. This area of precipitation is producing light snow and is a heck of a lot more consolidated than any model guidance has shown to this point, as I had been hinting at for several days.

Through the rest of the day, clouds will slowly increase in the afternoon and evening hours. I expect dry conditions through much of the day. Temperatures will average below normal, a theme this month, with highs ranging from the mid 20′s to around freezing along the coast.

Tonight, the mid level disturbance will race towards the forecast area. The moisture will dry out a bit due to down sloping off the Appellation Mountains this evening. However, as the disturbance interacts with some of the moisture from the Atlantic, I expect the precipitation shield to intensify once again over the forecast area. Generally a dusting to an inch can be expected from northern Pennsylvania, the southern Hudson Valley, and coastal Connecticut on south through southern New Jersey. Accumulations over an inch to possibly two inches will be possible in areas where a more concentrated snow band can develop. This is possible due to intensification of the thermal gradient along the coastal front. I expect this to potentially occur along the immediate coast. I increased the coverage area for this potential due to the strength of the disturbance being slightly stronger than forecasted at this time.

The disturbance will move quickly off the coast by late tomorrow morning with partly cloudy skies the rest of the afternoon and evening on Monday.

The upper level pattern is set up for round two and three of this winter pattern going forward, which I’ll cover in the next post.

As you may have read, I am not all that impressed with the potential for a Nor’ Easter this weekend. The thoughts on this potential are covered in the technical forecast discussion.

I do want to point out though that I think the theme I am discussing today will become a key issue this winter for storms along the coast. The position and strength of the ridge over the Western United States and the state of the North Atlantic Osscilation (NAO) will be key this winter. I am expecting a weakening Pacific jet stream this winter, which should allow for a ridge to develop over the West. However, the teleconnections that seem to continue to show up to this point can be dated back to the position of troughs and ridges over the western Pacific. The trough that develops over Japan has the axis of the trough over the Japan Sea. The progression of this large scale wave would suggest a trough axis along the East coast. The position of the trough axis slightly off the coast has lead to a compel of close calls already. Note the storm that has potential to develop off the East coast in late September and the potential storm for this weekend.

Now, there are indications of the Pacific setting up so that the ridge, trough positions would focus storms closer to the coast line. I am watching the changes in the Pacific and the Indian Ocean very carefully and it is these changes why I am holding off on issuing the winter forecast at this time.

I do think that there will be a better chance for storms along the East coast this year. The question now comes into whether the position of the troughs and ridges will allow the storms to develop close enough to the coast. If they do develop, will a progressive pattern from a weakening PNA ridge allow the storms enough time to develop. These questions are still unresolved and will likely be the main questions through the winter.

The majority of the severe weather will once again focus along a long and winding frontal boundary from the northern Plains through the Great Lakes and into the Northeast.

Over the northern Plains, the combination of a weakening MCS and a series of strengthening mid level disturbances will produce vertical and speed wind shear aloft and strong moisture and thermal convergence at the surface, which will support the development of strong to severe thunderstorms over the region. The upper level dynamics combined with the unstable atmosphere will lead to the development of thunderstorms capable of producing large hail, heavy downpours, wind gusts exceeding 65 mph, and isolated tornadoes. The most significant threat for severe thunderstorms will be found over Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, and Minnesota with decreasing coverage to the east over Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indian.

Another disturbance will produce showers and thunderstorms along the cold front over the Ohio Valley. The upper level dynamics are not as impressive in these areas, however marginal wind shear remains and thus the threat for large hail and wind gusts up to 65 mph remains a threat.

A large area of showers and thunderstorms have developed along and to the south of a warm front over New England. Strong isentropic lifting combined with a jet streak at 300 MB is producing a significant amount of lifting over northern New England. As a result, showers and thunderstorms continue to train over the area leading to the threat of flash flooding via heavy rainfall. Wind gusts exceeding 65 mph due to downdraft winds tapping into the jet maximum along with a 40 KT low level jet at 850 MB will also remain a threat.

Outflow boundaries from the heavy rainfall over northern New York and New England will further enhance the unstable atmosphere over much of the Mohawk and Hudson Valleys of New York, southern New England, the New York City metro and the northern Philadelphia metro including much of northeastern Pennsylvania. The influences of tropical storm Cristobal along with the influence of strong mid level disturbances from the approaching cold front is producing significant speed and vertical wind shear over the area, which will support the development of multi-cell or super-cell thunderstorms over much of the area. The most significant threat from these thunderstorms will be heavy rainfall, frequent lightning, large hail, and wind gusts over 65 mph. The dry air at the mid levels from the influence of Tropical Storm Cristobal may lead to the outbreak of small to large hail over northern and central New Jersey, northern Philadelphia metro, northeastern Pennsylvania, and New York City. Meanwhile, the outflow boundaries moving south over the Mohawk and Hudson Valleys will produce a more significant wind damage threat. In short, an active afternoon can be expected.
