Tornadic Signature In Thunderstorm Weakening

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

The severe thunderstorm over northeastern Salem County that produced a signature suggesting a possible tornado is weakening and the threat of a tornado from this thunderstorm is decreasing.  However, this thunderstorm is still dangerous with large hail, frequent lightning, and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph.

The severe thunderstorms over Camden County will move into central Burlington County in the next 60 minutes.  This thunderstorm will have the capability to produce large hail up to 1.75″ in diameter, which can produce significant hail damage.

The thunderstorm is also capable of wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, dangerous cloud to ground lightning, and heavy downpours.

Over One Inch Hail In Eastern Pennsylvania

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

The severe thunderstorms over Chester and Montgomery Counties of Pennsylvania have produced hail over 1 inch in diameter this morning.  Official spotter observations from the National Weather service have reported hail size ranging from 0.50″ to 2.00″ in diameter over West Chester, Pennsylvania.

These thunderstorms will continue into central Montgomery County in the next hour with large hail, frequent lightning, wind gusts over 60 mph, and heavy downpours.

Meanwhile, thunderstorms over southwestern New Jersey will continue to move to the north and east with heavy rain, large hail, frequent lightning, and strong wind gusts over 50 mph over the Philadelphia metro and much of central New Jersey.

This wave of strong to severe thunderstorms is only the first wave of potential severe weather through the day.

Severe Weather Today

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

The most likely area for severe weather today will be over the Southeast, specifically over eastern North Carolina, South Carolina, northern Georgia, and northern Alabama.  A cold front will slowly sink through this region while a series of strong disturbances in the upper and mid levels of the atmosphere enhance the thunderstorms.  The disturbances will produce increasingly strong vertical speed and directional shear over the region.  Colder temperatures aloft will also lead to the development of large hail in the strongest thunderstorms.  The thunderstorms will be capable of wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, frequent lightning, large hail, and heavy downpours.

Another disturbance over the eastern Great Lakes will move east towards the northern Mid Atlantic and western New England through tonight.  Although severe thunderstorms are not expected with this disturbance, heavy rain will be possible and may lead to localized urban flash flooding.

Strong thunderstorms are already impacting northeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey.  These thunderstorms are associated with a strengthening cold front moving from the Ohio Valley towards the forecast area.  The upper level dynamics are starting to become impressive.  As an upper level low begins to develop over New England, strong PVA will swing through the forecast area which will enhance the thunderstorms.  The increasing vertical wind shear will also generate strong wind gusts in these thunderstorms and possibly even an isolated tornado.

At this time, the thunderstorms are showing some signs of bowing characteristics which would suggest wind gusts over 60 mph.  Expect heavy rain, frequent lightning, large hail, and damaging winds with these thunderstorms this morning.

More to come!

Severe Weather Today

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

Severe thunderstorms will concentrate along and ahead of an advancing cold front over the northern Plains, Mid West, and western Great Lakes.  A strengthening disturbance moving south from Manitoba will enhance lifting ahead of the cold front, which will help destabilize the atmosphere.  However, low level and mid level vertical shear will be generally weak, thus limiting the potential for a tornado from these severe thunderstorms.  A strengthening low level jet stream will produce speed shear between 850 MB and the surface, which will support strong down draft winds.  The main threat from these thunderstorms will be frequent lightning, large hail, and wind gusts over 65 mph.

The rest of the nation is expected to be quiet, especially over the East where high pressure will dominate.

An area of heavy rain and strong to severe thunderstorms are moving to the northeast from southeastern Pennsylvania through Philadelphia and southwestern New Jersey.  The strongest thunderstorms are producing large hail of nickel to golfball size, wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, dangerous lightning, and very heavy rainfall.  The lightning has been observed to be very dangerous with deadly and frequent cloud to ground lightning.

These thunderstorms and heavy rain will continue to progress towards central and northern New Jersey including Trenton and Newark.  Towards late evening, these showers and thunderstorms will begin to impact New York City.

Main Threat So Far, Hail And Wind Gusts

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

Thus far, except for a brief rotation in the severe thunderstorms over Middlesex County, the thunderstorms this afternoon have produced primarily large hail from penny to golf ball size, and wind gusts over 60 mph.  There is still a threat for these thunderstorms to produce an isolated tornado, especially as the low level jet at 850 MB begins to strengthen this evening.

For those going to the Mets/Phillies game this evening at Shea Stadium, take caution that these dangerous storms will eventually reach Queens, New York and will likely have a significant impact on the game this evening

Severe Weather Today

Posted by: Steven DiMartino | Comments Comments Off

The severe weather today will be focused over the Mid West and Ohio Valley today where a stationary front combined with a series of mid level disturbance will support the development of strong to severe thunderstorms.  A strong MCS over the Mid-West will further enhance the low level dynamics via additional lifting from out flow boundaries.  The upper level disturbances will also add vertical and speed shear throughout the area which will lead to the development of isolated tornadoes, large hail, wind gusts exceeding 65 mph, and very heavy downpours.  Localized flooding will be possible in some of the thunderstorms.

The stationary front will extend towards the East coast with the threat for strong to severe thunderstorms as well.  The dynamics in Northeast and Mid Atlantic are rather weak with little vertical shear, however the atmosphere ahead of the cold front is unstable and can lead to an isolated severe thunderstorm this afternoon.  The main threat with these thunderstorms will be small hail and heavy downpours.  Training of the thunderstorms may lead to localized flash flooding.
