A preview of the a potentially very active afternoon was seen this afternoon over much of southern Monmouth and Ocean counties of New Jersey this afternoon. A weak disturbance, a remnant from the MCS that impacted much of the Mid West early this morning, sparked off a cluster of showers and thunderstorms. These thunderstorms [...]

The following snow and wind observations are from the National Weather Service. There were many areas that received heavy snow via the mesoscale banding that developed within this storm, however there were also some areas that received less than expected because of the influence of mesoscale banding. Overall, verification came in rather well on [...]

The precipitation with this storm is moving slightly faster than thought last night by about 3 hours. The dry slot is moving through the forecast area now rather than at 8 AM, however the intensity of the snow did not disappoint. Snowfall totals throughout the forecast around range from 1.8″ to 12″, but a [...]

For most of the forecast area, the forecasted ice and snow totals verified via reports from the National Weather Service. The one area that busted was in northeastern Pennsylvania where 6 to 10 inches of snow was expected. Instead, most locations in extreme northeastern Pennsylvania only received around 4 inches. When I looked back [...]

The models did this. The models did that. We have a had a lake cutter, a major snow storm, a rain storm, and even no storm at all. So clearly, we should hug the models from run to run.

The forecast for this coming weekend into next week is rather tricky to nail down. I don’t trust the details that the medium range model guidance is showing, especially in terms of precipitation amounts. I’ve been studying the February 15-18,2003 storm. Now, that does NOT mean I am thinking of similar precipitation totals (at [...]

Welcome to another start of the week! Well for some of us, MLK Day means that many will be off today while others get prepared for Inaugreation Day tomorrow, however the weather never takes a day off, so off I go!
The active pattern for the forecast area will continue today. A few scattered snow [...]

If you put your ear to the ground, you could hear the fall of a million snow lovers faint to the ground after seeing the 12Z GFS, which basically if taken verbatum would produce a significant snowfall for most of the forecast area, save southern New Jersey (even that location would still get measureable [...]

Instead of the several days of warm conditions, the developing negative NAO and pattern amplification will give the forecast area two warm days and some perfect timing for the weekend! Well, almost perfect as I expect rain, but at least there won’t be any serious travel problems.
A cold front will slowly move towards [...]
