Evening Thoughts- another round of severe weather?

5:38 PM
This afternoon, a strong trough is slowly progressing to the east through the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys.  The cold front associated with this trough is producing strong to severe thunderstorms over much of the Ohio and Tennessee Valley and is having some minor lifting influence over the forecast area as well.  A few isolated [...]

Heavy rain and severe weather a significant threat

7:30 AM
The forecast for today through tonight is best described as significantly complicated and potentially very active.  The main theme is basically the progression of the warm front currently over southwesterly Pennsylvania through eastern Virginia.  I want to start with the fact that the surface low pressure system is further north and weaker than forecasted [...]

Another rainy day for the region

7:39 AM
A clash of air masses is unfolding right over the forecast area as the marine air mass that has been over the forecast area the past several days slowly is eroded from the region and off the coast.  The latest surface map best describes the current situation.  High pressure remains off the New England [...]

Showers remain a threat as humid conditions dominant

10:10 AM
The type of pattern the forecast area is being influenced by is at times difficult to forecast for in terms of timing showers and thunderstorms as there are several factors that mixing the atmosphere.  For one, take a look at the latest visible satellite image.
The stationary front over the southern Mid Atlantic, is [...]

Evening Update- another disturbance on the way

8:13 PM
A disturbance along the stationary front is approaching the forecast area this evening with an area of showers and thunderstorms.  Given the heavy rain that has fallen, flood warning have been issued for parts of southeastern Pennsylvania this evening.
These showers will continue to progress eastward through the overnight hours and will be aided [...]

Strong thunderstorms on the move, more to come later

7:18 AM
There’s a lot to discuss this morning, so lets dive right into it!
An impressive line of thunderstorms has developed early this morning in response to the strong low level jet stream at 950 and 850 MB this morning.  The warm front continues to lift north and eastward, but is having some difficulty doing so [...]

Active weather pattern continues for this week

7:28 AM
The weather pattern for this summer certainly is developing an active characteristic as yet another week of persistent threats of showers and thunderstorms can be expected.
There are a lot of interesting features to examine on the water vapor this morning, so lets dive right in!  A trough over the Canadian Maritimes continues to slowly [...]

Periods of heavy rain through Friday

1:59 PM
This afternoon, the disturbance over the southern Mississippi Valley is pushing towards the Tennessee Valley.  As a result, a surface low pressure system is quickly organizing over the Southeast.  As you can see with the radar, precipitation is quickly developing over southern Pennsylvania through the Ohio Valley while there is clearly a low level [...]

Raw conditions continue, but weekend weather looks great

9:02 AM
The stationary front this morning has finally pushed south of New Jersey, which puts the entire forecast area in a cool, marine dominated air mass for the next 48 hours.  The water vapor satellite gives us an excellent picture into what is going on and what will play out through Friday.  The disturbance that [...]
