The temperatures may be warmer, but the active storm track that the Philadelphia and New York City metropolitan area experienced in February is returning once again.
The easterly fetch developing at the mid and lower levels of the atmosphere is already influencing the northern Mid Atlantic as Atlantic moisture moves into the coastal plain. The [...]

Strong moisture advection off the Atlantic is supporting light to moderate rain along the coast and light snow over portions of Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, and northeastern Pennsylvania. The snow will continue to slowly accumulate over these locations as temperatures slowly fall into the upper 20’s to lower 30’s with accumulations of another 1 [...]

A strong area of low pressure is rapidly developing along the Gulf Coast, however this storm is staying far enough south and east to not have a major impact on the region’s weather.
The “pattern changer” as I like to call it is not over the Gulf Coast however but the West coast as a [...]

There are times when as a forecaster, I look at a water vapor satellite and everything just comes together for me in terms of how I think this storm will evolve. Usually it is a matter of just sitting back and watching the water vapor loop again and again, just observing the way the [...]

The 00Z guidance confirmed my suspicion that the 12Z guidance was not handling the development of the 700 MB upper low correctly.
At this time, this storm is clearly going to have a major impact on the entire northern Mid Atlantic. While I likely will have to adjust some features on the snowfall map to the [...]

This morning I discussed my uncertainty in the forecast and where I felt the largest threat for an accumulating snowfall will be most likely. While my uncertainty for the storm was pretty clear, I did feel confident enough to state that the northern interior was going to miss out on this storm. My concern [...]

The Sub Tropical disturbance moving through the Mississippi Valley is well organized and impressive, which is allowing the disturbance to draw plenty of moisture to the north over the Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley, and Southeast. However, the current trend in guidance combined with the latest observations of the water vapor satellite images suggest [...]

This morning, a strong Sub Tropical disturbance is driving out of the Mississippi Valley and moving towards the Tennessee Valley. This disturbance will eventually reach the southern Mid Atlantic coast by tomorrow morning to bring portions of the Philadelphia metropolitan area a mix of snow, sleet, and rain.
Currently, the disturbance is pulling up moisture [...]

The strong Arctic disturbance is on the move this afternoon and is holding together rather well. The latest radar images have light to moderate snow over much of the Ohio Valley this afternoon which is slowly progressing eastward towards western Pennsylvania.
My overall thoughts on this storm from the past few days have not [...]

This morning it is pretty obvious where the next area of low pressure system that will impact the northern Mid Atlantic currently resides. A strong Arctic disturbance is now racing through the Mid West and western Great Lakes and will reach the Ohio Valley tonight. This disturbance and the associated low pressure system will [...]
