This evening, cold air is starting to work into the northern Mid Atlantic after a very warm afternoon ahead of a strong cold front. Temperatures will continue to fall through the 40’s and into the 30’s by tomorrow morning.
Tonight is going to be an interesting run on the model guidance. The 12Z guidance still [...]

While high pressure and a building ridge holds sway over the Mid Atlantic this evening, trouble is brewing over the Southwestern United States.
Tropical Storm Rick, at one point a strong hurricane, is racing to the northeast towards mainland Mexico. The moisture from this tropical system is already interacting with a strong disturbance over the [...]

Henri weakened into a remnant low pressure system yesterday afternoon under the influence of strong southwesterly shear. If Henri had hung on for a few more hours, the tropical system may have had a chance to survive.
A large ridge is expanding from the Gulf of Mexico into the western Caribbean and western Atlantic. Dry [...]

When I think of a developing tropical system, I usually expect to have a defined area of convection under the influence of at least weak shear. Tropical Storm Henri’s formation bucks the typical characteristics of a developing tropical system. Tropical Storm Henri is located under the large area of convection to the northeast of [...]

I’ve been studying the pattern and the clues that we are seeing now to get a handle on what to expect for the rest of October and there are some very interesting features that are developing this morning. So let’s dive right into it!
First this morning I went to go check out the developments [...]

The Tropical Atlantic has produced a surprise tropical storm over the northeastern Atlantic, roughly 420 miles northeast of the Azores Islands. Tropical Storm Grace is a compact tropical system that has developed along an old stationary frontal boundary. The future of Tropical Storm Grace is pretty much nailed down as a deep trough over [...]

A new Tropical Depression has formed over the Atlantic yesterday afternoon, however the future prospects of this system are not very impressive. There is a slight chance that this depression could reach tropical storm strength over the next 24 hours and become Tropical Storm Grace. However, this tropical system is very poorly organized. Frankly, [...]

Once again, there are no signs of tropical development across the Atlantic this morning.
Strong wester shear dominates from the Gulf Coast through the Atlantic inhibiting any disturbance from developing into an organized tropical system.
A strong upper low is also to the northeast of Africa and is also producing strong shear along the African coast.
No [...]

There is a slight uptick in activity over the Tropical Atlantic this morning. The most obvious area of disturbed weather is over the central Tropical Atlantic where a strong disturbance is organizing. This disturbance is producing a significant amount of convection around a developing low level center of circulation. Upper level winds will continue [...]

As expected, Fred continues to weaken under the influence of strong southwesterly shear. The shear is forcing much of the convection of Tropical Storm Fred to the east of the center of circulation.
Over the next 48 hours I expect Fred to continue to weaken and will no longer remain an organized tropical system by [...]
